As it's a national competition(organised by drill committee), we would definitely need your (DIs) help and your help will be appreciated.

Drill Instructor Qualifying 2011 - 20th November 2010
We are adding one more session of DI Qualifying, just in case you cannot attend the 2nd round next year or you fear that you may not pass the first time round! (pssst... it's not that hard to pass! Really!!!) You just need to be smart and consistent throughout the Practical Assessment! Of course you will need to have good knowledge of drill whereby you will be tested during the theory session! Looking for confident girls and officers to come join us, in the GB Drill family! =)

Pre requisites:
Girls: Attained Drill Stage 1 to Stage 3 badges (and you must wear them on during the DI Qualifying!)
Officers: Know and can EXECUTE Drill Stage 1 to Stage 3 movements

Happy New Year everyone! It has been an eventful year in 2009. Moving forward to a better 2010!

And to kick off the year, we had our DI Qualifying Test 2010. The girls' and officers' drills standards are definitely getting better each year! It must be the Drill Competition we had last year that helped to raise the standards. =)
For our existing Drill Instructors, please remember to complete your 2 National Projects (one of which a Zonal Drill Test) and to attend DI Refresher Course to renew your qualified status.

For officers who want to learn drill, please come for the Basic Officers Drill Course which are held 2 times a year (March & August). During the sessions, you will be able to learn more drill movements which you can impart to your girls back in the company!

To increase the number of Drill Instructors across the nation, we are having 2 DI Qualifying Tests for the subsequent DI Courses! For DI Course 2011 next year, we will be holding a Qualifying Test in 2010 November! Ladies who do not manage to pass the first round are allowed to participate in the Jan 2011 DI Qualifying.

It's over! It has been surprises upon surprises.

One of the first few times that it rained over the 2 weekends for Drill Competition. (It has never poured ever since year 2000 for Drill Competition)

Thank God for the girls and officers who were helping us, without your woman power, we wouldn't have been able to run this event properly.

Thank you all for accomodating to the camp's requests like the phones and making the uncles go up and down the buses to exchange passes. It was crazy! But you were so accomodating.

Lastly, congratulations to the challenge shield winners!

And now, time to hit books proper and do assignments. And... things to clear up the mess in my room. ;)

Was quite disappointed to read how the girls were blaming the sound, the weather and everything else for their results at the competition except themselves.

WOW! A whirlwind of events happening today!

Lots of minor hiccups but I thank God for people who were quick to respond and solve the problems. Thank God for problem solvers!

The most "dramatic" thing that happened was the downpour. Oh well.. but God is still good, He held the rain till the 2nd last contingent.

I'm glad that today is finally over, a long day which started 0700hrs @ Nee Soon camp.

Thank God for Ms T, who gave us soyabean drinks for the judges as the breakfast haven't arrived.

Thank God for the judges who stood under the sun from 0900hrs till evening.

Thank God for Ms L and team who comes back every competition to help with scoring.

Thank God for Ms P who gave the wisest advice and led everyone immediately into the plan for wet weather program.

Thank God for our mentors and senior officers who were here for us. :)

The silent drill for the girls were impressive! Who says we need timing for everything? :) Well, the Pioneer challenge shield is already taken by 2nd Company (S). So let's see who'll take the remaining 2 shields.

More tips!

1. Polish your boots!
2. GB one-fold socks
3. Check that accessories are properly secured
4. Tie is of the correct length
5. Hair nets are in stock, long hair is plaited properly
6. No ear studs!
7. Uniform is not too short
8. Chevrons, GB pocket crest in the right position

Check your uniform early, don't do it last minute. :)

Tips for Drill Competition

Drill Competition is in FIVE DAYS TIME!!!

Some common sense tips..
1. Drinks lots of water, you don't want to faint in front of everyone. Not cool.
2. Eat before the competition to ensure you have enough carbo in your body. Don't overeat too, overeating will cause you to have bad pains in your tummy (for me, at least).
3. Sleep well the night before. Lack of sleep will not help you to perform at your best.
4. Clear all of your doubts with the drill manual! Not from your seniors! This is important!
5. Put sunblock! Protect your face, your arms! You don't want to have freckles when you grow old or ugly caplines. :P
6. Triple secure your caps. Totally. We had girls dropping caps on competition ground. Though you'll suddenly feel cooler than the rest of the contingent, but..
mishaps like tripping over the cap, hair blocking your view.. and for the more aesthetic part would be.. it'll be captured on camera!!
7. Pray. :)

Will put in more when I think of any. For now, back to work and I'll see all of you these coming Saturdays!

It's not difficult @ all. The team just need to constantly have the same rhythm in their mind. Practise, sit together and do your timing. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8..

Do your silent drill in a constant beat, this will allow some predictability in your movements when doing the silent drill. You can also do a half beat, meaning: 1n2n3n4, 2n2n3n4n.

Tips for DI Qualifying Test

Some tips.. Some are.. "duh?!" but it's important. :)

1. Know your commands well. Don't practise last minute. We will KNOW if you don't know. ;)

2. Be Smart. Not just the brainy smart but smart in wearing your uniform and when you're executing the commands. Simple, basic things like straightening your elbows, keeping your dressing, not dragging your boots are essential. Not forgetting some others like lifting 90 degrees when doing your static drils.

3. Be prepared to command if the need arises. This means, you need to know ALL of your drill stage commands. Read the drill manual.

4. Be confident and able to adjust to situation.

5. You will be placed in contingents that may not march the same way as you or have a commander that commands differently from your seniors, learn to adjust quickly.

6. Drill theory test is really easy, if you study for it. ;)

7. Lastly, drink lots of water and eat your breakfast. Put in your best effort. :)

Some tips for choosing the right song:
1. Choose a song which has the tempo that your contingent is comfortable with.
2. Songs with definite bass beats helps your contingent to use the bass beat as timing.
3. Girls should be proud to be using the song, if not, they'll be BORED.

Drill Camp 2008

Drill Camp 2008 is coming up!! This year, it will not be a stay-over camp. So no staying-over ya??

Drill Camp will be targeted at companies without DIs. Girls who have attended before are not allowed to attend again.

Each company can send a maximum of 2 girls to learn how to teach drill back in their companies. Officers who are interested are welcome too. Through the drill camp, we will also go through the drill stages and you can get to clarify any misconceptions that you have too.

The details are as follows:
Date: 15th Nov (Sat)

Reporting time: 8.30am
Break Camp: 5pm
Venue: GBC

*Calling all companies who have a need to rise up instructors to teach your girls drill, do sign your girls and officers up for this camp!!
* Girls who are interested to learn and teach drill in your companies, do approach your Captains/ teacher-in-charge to sign you up for this camp. Maximum participants are capped at 60. So do sign up now to avoid disappointment!!

Calling all DIs past and present, we are looking for DIs who are keen to help organise the camp. This will really give you insight into drill at National level and complete your national project for the year, so if you are interested, do email us at edrillcomm@gmail.com.

Zonal Drill Test

Okie!! It has been a long time that we have updated this drill blog.. Do continue to view this blog ya? We will try to update more often. :p

Continue to send in any questions that you have regarding drill so that we can answer the questions and share it with everyone too! :)

Well!! Here's the guidelines to help the drill represtatives within each zone in planning the respective zonal drill test.

1. Decide on the date to conduct the zonal drill test
2. Decide on venue (GBHQ or School)
3. Ask for rough estimate of the number of girls for each stage
4. Ask for DIs from the zone
5. Decide on how the test will be conducted given the number of DIs. I.e. timings (staggered by company? or by stages?)
6. Decide on whether to allow those who passed the test earlier to take the next stage in that same day (Depending on the number of DIs available and the number of girls taking the drill test)
7. Deadline for namelist to be collated by drill representative

Hopefully the guidelines will be useful in helping you in planning the zonal drill test. :)

Wow!! The first drill event of the year is here!!

It's the DI Qualifying Test and the DI Course for both the officers as well as the girls. Do take note that each company can only send up to 5 participants.

Do sign up for the event if you are:

Girls who had passed Stage 1 – 3 Drill Tests & know how to command
Officers who know how to command and can execute Stage 1 – 3 drill movements

After completing the DI course, DIs-to-be are to participate in a national project (further instructions will be given)

A question:

When a gb girl is wearing her full-U, does she or does she not needs to salute the officer when the officer is not in full-U? The officer who is not in full-U don't have to salute back when a girl in full-U salute her officer. Officer just need to nod her head.

The simplest rule to remember is that whenever you are wearing FULL-UNIFORM, you'll NEED TO salute, regardless of what your officer is wearing.

Wow! I just realised it's been 2 months since the last post!

I guess we havent had many drill events in the past few months and wont be having anymore until drill camp in Nov. It's really rest time for us :D

But keep the questions coming in and we'll answer them k? :)

As for the last two questions, I'll just post them up so that everyone will know

Question: When receiving awards, do we shake hands first or receive awards first?

Answer:
Normal protocol is to shake hands first, then receive awards. this is also common when not in uniform, at school functions or business functions.

So... we shake hands, then receive awards.

Question: With regards to ...langkah ka-sebelah kanan, do we always start moving with our right leg? And for odd numbers, do we bang with the left leg? We bang with the right if it is for even numbers? And it is the exact opposite for langkah ke-sebelah kiri?

Answer: This was answered during officers retreat (we're pretty efficient thanks to mengru ;) ), but the official reply...

Firstly, some of you may be shaking your heads wondering what is langkah ka-sebelah kanan??? Frankly, we scratched our heads too for awhile.

But the command is (no. of paces) langkah ka-sebelah kanan/kiri Gerak! It's a command for taking steps to the left or the right and well, to answer the question,. if we are taking steps to the left, we start moving our left foot first and always bang with our right. If we're moving to the right, we always start with our right foot and bang with our left.

We've got great news for you!! :)

We will be printing a drill t-shirt for all DIs and drill committee members . The cost is $13 and the design is attached.
We are going for a funky t-shirt look, not like the normal uniform or gb polo tees, so that you can wear the t-shirt out after events instead of having to change out to street clothes. The t-shirt willl be 100% cotton. Yup... we're really excited about it! :)

So... if you are interested in purchasing the t-shirt(100% cost price, no profit to us), please do tell us your size. The sizes are the normal 34, 36, 38, etc. Please DO NOT order one size bigger. Due to the cutting of the t-shirt (ladies cut), we will already be "upsizing" whatever size you give us by 1.

Actually, your question is more on uniform etiquette and it's good because we should have done a post on this earlier. I believe your question is more about...

When to salute?
- Whenever you're in uniform, regardless of whether your officers are in uniform

If your officers are in uniform, they will return the salute
However, if your officers are not in uniform, they will just nod their head to aknowledge the salute

By the way, one more important point.

In GB, we emphasize respect for your officers/teacher helpers

If you are in school or at any gb events and you see your officers walking past, you should salute and greet your officers/teacher helpers

If you are in a group, you will all fall in and the one with the highest rank would salute and greet your officer on behalf of the group

* After this post, I hope you girls would practice this and greet your officers. It's really a basic sign of respect :)

Dari kanan/kiri/tengah chepat jalan

Wow! It's really great.. just found something else to blog about since someone asked another question

So... Do you know when to use Dari kanan/kiri/tengah chepat jalan? Or are they all interchangable?

First.... we'll always go back to the english translation(english being our 1st language and all)

Dari kanan chepat jalan = From right, quick march
Dari kiri chepat jalan = From left, quick march
Dari tengah chepat jalan = From centre, quick march

So, what's the right, left and centre all about? It tells you where to take dressing from
Recap: We always take dressing from our right marker's row

So if the right marker is on the right of the contingent (i.e. facing your true left), the command would be Dari kanan chepat jalan

If the right marker is on the left of the contingent (i.e. facing your true right), the command would be Dari kiri chepat jalan

If you're facing your front or back, the command would be dari tengah chepat jalan

Thanks for the question! :D

First, 2 definitions you should know:
Keluar Baris = Fall Out
Besurai = Dismiss

Keluar baris is a command that marks a break in the drill parade and not the end of it.
It is executed by turning to the right and doing a berhenti.
PLEASE NOTE: There is NO salute involved
Therefore, it would not matter whether you are in uniform or not, the execution is the same.

However, besurai is given at the end as a command to dismiss girls and not gather them again. It is executed by turning to the right, saluting to the officer (if present) and then doing a berhenti.

Hope this helps to differientate between keluar baris and besurai and has answered your question! :)

di refresher 07

had DI refresher on 16th june.. :)

it was really a good time spent together. had lunch and really talked about our lives and laughed at each other. i think GOD is indeed doing something in our midst.

my vision for DIs was never something that's just a programme. and my vision for the committee was never to just set rules, decide on how to wear uniform and go round every LC to tell you to lift up your leg 90 degrees. LOL. all i really wanted was and IS STILL to invest in lives and impart all that i had learnt in gb as a girl and officer now.

the DIs this time round were more responsive. somehow felt like there wasn't a wall anymore and we as committee peeps were not as guarded as before. i guess it's because of my constant conversation with J.. about needing to open ourselves up to the DIs.. which made it easier. GOD is good. :)

went to the office for a while and walked past the stairways, where i heard a group of girls[from PBB] preparing for singspiration. as they sang and played the guitar, i was somehow transported back in time; when i was still a girl. the memories of playing the guitar and singing with my fellow gb friends from other companies came flooding back. i really missed those times. as you grow older, you somehow lose that kind of fellowship that you have with your friends.

well, i thank GOD for my friends in drill committee. it's so amazing that all of us come from different companies and we get to work together. j's from 1st, sok and est's from 2nd, yl's from 26th, jt's from 34th, jas' from 10th, sweed's from 4th and i'm from 14th. i guess it's the comradeship if there's such a word. and GOD.

that's the difference between gb and other ccas. that the love of GOD's shared abroad in our hearts.. by the HOLY GHOST.. which is given... which is given.. unto us.. to us.. unto us.. :)

well, as for myself.. i want to leave a legacy. something that was planted in my heart when i went for icgb last year. and touch lives. :)

YAY! Our T-shirt!

We had a drill comm meeting yesterday and since only one DI has voiced her comments, we have taken the liberty of deciding, so here's the final design! :)

We'll start to negotiate the printing details and I believe by the time this year's batch of DIs graduate, we would have the shirt ready. YAY! Exciting stuff! :)

Finally!!! The much awaited t-shirt design is here! :) It's a simple GB Drill logo and a designed footprint at the back. The t-shirt will be a cotton shirt. Cost is approximately $13. The t-shirt will be for all drill committee members and DIs to be worn at GB events.
So, for all DIs.. please cast your votes abt which shirt design and colour you'll like the best and should you come up with any other design, please feel free to email us at edrillcomm@gmail.com

To give u all a feel of the kind of shirt we want we have included a model. Got a better idea? It's gonna be a cotton polo t-shirt, much like what you would wear to go out.

Really want to thank God for blessing the programme and esp the fellowship during DI Refresher today.
We were just talking about it and remarking about how fellowship was really smooth and how we could see that you all had fun and were enjoying yourselves and getting to know one another better. Thanks to all of you for being so spontaneous.

It was really a good course. Can feel the rumbling.. of the DIs going back to their companies to make a difference;)

Yup, as promised, the t-shirt designs will be coming up real soon! :) Once i organise everything properly...

Made our way down to KCP for June LC yesterday
The weather was really HOT

I realise a lot of people dont read our blog, because if not, there are many things they would have known
Like how you don't have to be facing the front before you give senang diri, etc.
Oh wellz..

Quite disappointed to be faced with lots of colourful converse shoes and girls with long fingernails. Yes, yes, it's the holidays but you're still coming for a GB event. I'm sure you wont be wearing and doing stuff like that for PPB camp right?
Isn't it the same? That you're coming for LC to be PROMOTED?

Fainting

Definition

Fainting (syncope) is the partial or complete loss of consciousness with interruption of awareness of oneself and ones surroundings. When the loss of consciousness is temporary and there is spontaneous recovery, it is referred to as syncope(sin-ko-pea) or, in nonmedical terms, fainting.

Syncope is due to a temporary reduction in blood flow and therefore a shortage of oxygen to the brain. This leads to lightheadedness or a "black out" episode, a loss of consciousness. Temporary impairment of the blood supply to the brain can be caused by heart conditions and by conditions that do not directly involve the heart.

Causes (pertaining to drill/being on parade)

1. Dehydration

Our body needs a certain amount of fluid to function well.

During parades, when you sweat a lot, there is a loss of fluids which can cause dehydration

To solve the problem, always drink a lot of water before you come for practices/parades. Drinking isotonic drinks helps too.

2. Hunger

Lack of food causes your body to have less energy to carry out the necessary functions. Something like a parade really requires your energy and strength, so if you havent eaten, your body processes will start to shut down as there's not enough energy left.

Please, please, please always remember to eat before you have a parade or need to do drill. Take care of your body and it's needs!

3. Reduction in blood circulation

Often, this is the major cause of most people fainting on parade. When we are in a stationary position, blood circulation is reduced and when less oxygen gets to your brain you feel light-headed and black-out.

That's why we always walk around and ask you all to shift the weight from one foot to another or wringle your toes. Try to improve your circulation when standing still.

4. Fatigue

People faint when they are really tired so try not to go out and party late into the night before a parade the next day. ;)

5. Hyperventilation

Hyperventilation happens when you are very tensed and start breathing too quickly. This causes your heart to overwork and places tremendous stress on your body.

It happened to me once before and I felt like I was suffocating because not enough oxygen was getting to me.

So... relax! :) Dont have to be so tensed. Like we've said many times before, we are not tt scary. Just stand, breathe normally, and think of where you'll be going shopping later or the nice movie you'll be watching after the parade or the air-con place you want to go to or the nice hot bath you'll take after all these is over. Heh, i guess you get my point.

Lastly, your well-being is really the most important thing to all of us officers. We really dont want you to faint or worst still, just fall flat on the ground. It can be very dangerous if you say that you dont want to come out even tho you are not feeling well already. We would always rather you fall out than you fall literally.
So with these points, we hope you all will be more prepared to take on any parades you may have or even for the normal drill sessions these are always good things to look out for. Eat, sleep, drink well! :)

Whee! Went out today to source for pple to print our drill t-shirt :D
Quite interesting, meeting the different kinds of business people
I think because of the way we dressed they thought we were college gals :p

Managed to find a really reasonable price for our current design :) :)
But went to this other company, and I was truly impressed by their professionalism
Their range of shirts are quite nice too..
But it'll mean that I'll have to relook the design :p

So... DIs, look out for the new t-shirt! :)
I've been given a end july deadline, so by then, u'll definitely have news abt this elusive t-shirt.. :p
But it'll definitely be something nice! ;)

What to do if there are not enough people to form a full contingent? Where should the lobangs (holes) be positioned?

They should always be the rank to the left of the left marker. See illustrations below

If there is only one girl short of a full contingent, the hole should be at position 1.
If there are two girls short, the 2nd hole should be at position 2.

What happens if there are 3 girls short? Think abt it.. ;)

Timing for hentak

This is the speedy answering machine at your service.

The question is: What should timing for hentak be?

The answer: 120 paces per minute

It's the same timing as marching. This also means that you would have tapped your left and right foot in 1 sec.

So in terms of timing "left, left, left right", this should all be said in 3 secs.

How to get SHINY boots

Average time: 60 mins

How?
Seasoning (just like cooking) : Spread a thick layer of polish over your boots. Allow it to dry for 5 minutes
Polishing: Wrap a soft, clean cloth (e ones used to wash cars would be good) around your index finger and dip it in water so it is wet but not dripping.
Using a small circular motion, start to apply the dried polish to your boots until a shine starts to appear.
Keep repeating these steps to build up a nice even shine for your boots (then you can see the reflection of your teeth on your boots!)

Why(for those like me who need to know)?
Wet cloth: This prevents the polish from sticking to the cloth and thus allowing it to be applied to your boots
Polish: Use minimal amounts of polish to build up the shine. If too much polish is used, the solvent(i.e. what the polish is dissolved in) in the polish will dissolve the previous layers of polish you have built up :'(

Don't
- Do not use heat to melt the polish on your boots. There is no need for that!
- Do not use too much water causing your boots to be water-shined. When the sun comes out and dries up all the water, your boots will look really dull
- Do not use instant shoe polish because it causes your boots to crack after awhile. Learning to polish boots really teaches patience and determination

National Drill Competition'07

After the many months of preparations, NDC'07 ended last sat.
Congatulations to all the teams! In our eyes, each contingent is a winner for all the time, effort, sweat and tears that you put in. May the friendships forged, the lessons learnt and the memories shared continue to be a part of your life.
In the next few weeks, we'll be posting more to address the common mistakes that we spotted at this competition.
Indeed, it was a fruitful competition, to see how the standard of drill across all the companies have improved tremendously. Special mention goes to the relatively new companies that have performed wonderfully. Great job girls and trainers!
